How Queensland regional public holidays work

A regional or local public holiday only applies within the geographic area named in the official appointment. Two nearby towns can therefore observe different show-holiday dates, and a holiday applying to one council area should not automatically be treated as applying to surrounding districts.

For that reason, this site retains the official geographic description with each regional date instead of reducing every appointment to a broad city or region name.

Regional public holiday vs special bank holiday

These are not the same thing. A Queensland show holiday appointed as a public holiday is a public holiday within its declared district. Queensland also appoints special holidays for particular communities and events. Those special dates are commonly described as bank holidays and are not general public holidays.

Keeping those classifications separate matters for calculators, search results and calendar displays. Our central calendar dataset stores them separately so a special local date is not accidentally presented as a statewide or regional public holiday.

Brisbane Ekka holiday

Brisbane normally observes the Royal Queensland Show holiday on the Wednesday during the Ekka period. Other Queensland regions can observe the Royal Queensland Show on another date, or observe a different local show holiday entirely.

Always check the declared area

Regional appointments can contain detailed boundaries, former shire divisions, townships or excluded areas. If you are using a show holiday for employment, payroll or another legal purpose, check the official Queensland Government description for the relevant year and location.
