Gold Coast
The Gold Coast gives you a large choice of patrolled beaches, accommodation and dining. Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and the southern beaches around Coolangatta suit travellers who want plenty of facilities close by. On a public-holiday weekend, allow extra time for traffic and parking and book accommodation early.
Sunshine Coast
The Sunshine Coast offers a different mix of beach towns, from Noosa and Coolum to Mooloolaba and Caloundra. It works well for families who want beaches plus easy access to coastal walks, hinterland drives and casual dining.
Minjerribah / North Stradbroke Island
For an island break close to South East Queensland, Minjerribah offers beaches, headland walks and a slower pace. Vehicle and passenger ferry capacity can fill on long weekends, so transport should be organised before you travel.
Whitsundays
The Whitsundays suit a longer public-holiday break rather than a quick day trip. Airlie Beach is the main mainland base, while island stays and reef trips require more planning. Weather and marine conditions can affect tours, so check current operator advice.
Cairns and Tropical North Queensland
Cairns is a useful base for reef and coastal trips, although tropical conditions differ from South East Queensland. Heat, humidity, wet-season weather and marine stinger conditions can all affect plans at different times of year.

Check surf-lifesaving advice, swim between the flags where patrols operate, confirm ferry or tour bookings, and expect higher demand for accommodation and parking. Also check whether the public holiday applies statewide or only to a local area before assuming businesses or services will operate on holiday hours.
